Repower America — 100% Clean Electricity in 10 Years

Davis, CA is much more than a marker on a map.  Being the child of a two college professors, I’ve lived in my share of college towns. As an adult, I’ve decided to lay down roots here in Davis because of several reasons, the Davis proactive community being one of them. With this idea in mind I share the following website: Repower America.

Repower America is the bold clean energy plan to “repower” our country with 100% clean electricity within 10 years.

First described in a speech last July by Al Gore, Repower America means new industries with high-paying jobs. It means lower energy costs. And, it means substituting clean domestic sources of energy and a transition away from dirty coal and foreign oil. Read about the goal here.

Looking to Repower your piece of the world? As an EcoBroker and former PV designer I can anser any quetions you might have about Clean Energy for your current or future home.  Just ask me. I have answers.

Davis, CA Wi-Fi Hotspots

I have an office, I do. I’m lucky enough to have an office in the heart of Downtown Davis, located at  505 Second street.  My office is lovely, a renovated fifties home with hardwood floors, an old-fashioned porch and beautiful landscaping. But, if I’m in the office rarely. More likely, you’ll find me holding **Open Homes, previewing properties for clients or showing homes to buyers.

In between, I drink a lot of tea and love to eat. But, I also need to catch up with client emails and property requests… so, what’s a hungry, tea loving girl to do?

Davis Wi-Fi Hotspots

Luckily, forward thinking business owners and city planners have provided Wi-fi spots throughout the downtown. Below is a list of the ones I’ve found. If you know of other please comment and share. Happy Hotspotting!

Cool Moms Care About Green Living

As a mother of three, a full-time Davis real estate agent, and a one-time PV designer, I don’t have time for much else. Really though, it doesn’t matter what your occupation, passion or hobbies are, any invested parent can understand the time commitment involved in raising healthy children. But, what happens when you can about other things as well?

Enter CoolPeopleCare and CoolMomsCare (perhaps there is a CoolDadsCare page out there, but I wasn’t looking). These “Cool” pages are dedicated to reminding you of little things you can do, many times in five minutes or less, that will help change your environment, both physical and psychological…. very cool indeed.

Today is World Environment Day

…and the truth is I wouldn’t have known it were it not for the CoolMomsCare message sitting in my email box this morning.
CoolMomsCare | An Environmental Face Forward

I was inspired. I thought, have a commitment to Green Living and the Environment, but certainly I could do more.

So as of today, World Environment Day 2008, I will be blogging, not only about the Davis Real Estate Market, but Davis Green Living resources, solar energy (to retrofit your new home with), and anything else I can think to share.

Do you have a good tip, know of a composting workshop, or feel you have something to contribute? Please do! Email me and I would be happy to set you up as a guest contributor, or if writing isn’t your thing, just let me know and I can post myself. Either way I’d love to hear from you.

Here’s to happy Green Living!

The Circle of Life of the Davis Tax Dollar

Written by Bruce Gallaudet of University Honda, Chamber Board Member

Davis Community When individuals and families spend their money in Davis, it strengthens local businesses — and a strong local economy means many things:

• More jobs, ranging from the part-time, entry-level positions that appeal to high school and university students, to full-time sales, customer service, research, management and ownership roles.

• These local positions translate to less gas used to get to work, lightening our environmental impact; convenience and saving money on auto expenses are pleasant side effects of living and working in town.

• Customer service is excellent in Davis; often, you are purchasing from a neighbor or friend.

A major component of local spending are the benefits service clubs, non-profit organizations, sports groups and our schools reap from a strong business community: Next time you’re at the Davis Little League fields, look at the outfield fence — who’s advertising? How about Davis Youth Soccer League fields? American Youth Soccer League tournament programs? Who sponsors Davis Youth Softball teams? Who donates to the DPNS, Pioneer Elementary, Davis Kiwanis and other myriad silent auctions? Ever see Arden Fair Mall get behind a project like the Davis Art Center or underwrite the Davis High Baseball Team Golf Tournament?

What is the end result of the charitable contributions by Davis businesses?
1. The work of service clubs such as the Kiwanis and Rotary is supported.
2. Fees in youth sports stay affordable, and all families can participate; scholarships provided; facilities improved.
3. Outreach program such as Yolo Hospice and STEAC help more people; improve their services; and in some cases, just keep their doors open.
4. Ever wonder how the Madrigals get to Europe to perform?
5. Know why the City of Davis doesn’t go completely bankrupt? Answer: ever-increasing business license fees, assessment districts, building-permit fee increases, etc.

Davis is a GREAT community, with a quality of life rarely seen as its foundation. Our city is safe, clean and loaded with activities for all our residents — youth and seniors included. The local business community has a heart that beats full of charity, and it is crucial for every one of us to think first about buying in Davis — the Circle of Life of our hard-earned dollars depends on it.

Top Ten Reasons to Call Yolo County Country Living, “Home”.

Posted by Carmen Isais

Rural Yolo CountyThis top ten list came across my desk from the good people at Realtor Magazine, and I thought it odd that California country living wouldn’t have at least made favorable mention.

According to the Progressive Farmer, the top 10 best places to live in rural America are:

  1. Kent County, Md.  Sales of development rights keep sprawl at bay
  2. Ellis County, Kan.  A coalition has revitalized economic vitality.
  3. Livingston County, Mo.  Emphasis on regional marketing has made the area more  livable.
  4. Obion County, Tenn.  Agriculture and industry have formed a great partnership.
  5. Columbia County, Pa.  Located near New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, this area has focused on preserving farming for generations.
  6. Wexford County, Mich.  Christmas tree production and tourism has overtaken lumber and general farming to help this area flourish.
  7. Fayette County, Texas.  This area remains prime cattle ranching country.
  8. Coffee County, Ala.  Between boll weevils and tornados, this territory has been tested and comes out a winner.
  9. Gilchrist County, Fla. This area is hard-pressed by sprawl, but its land restrictions have so far kept out developers.
  10. La Plata County, Colo.  This county has successfully educated urban locals about the importance of locally grown food.

Boll wevils and tornadoes?  If lack of infestation and catastrophic weather make up the criteria for good country living, then sorry Coffee County, Alabama… I hope you have something else going for you.

Speaking locally, here are my top ten reasons to buy and live in Yolo county country property.

  1. Full Belly Farm: From CSA produce boxes to hoe downs, this Certified Organic farm located in Guinda and has a lot to offer.
  2. U.C. Davis University: With extension centers, learning exchanges and an annual and Picnic Day, this university extends learning opportunities to the community at large.
  3.  Yolo County Airport: Small planes can go from here to south of the border. How fantastic is that?
  4. Davis Bike Club: For all you riders out there.
  5.  Yolo Wool Mill: For those of you who, like me, rather stay home and knit than ride… aside from processing wool, the Yolo Wool Mill sells yarn and wool directly to the public.
  6. The Woodland Opera House: Community Theater on a historic stage.
  7. The Mondavi Center: Top of the line performing arts center. Save yourself a trip to San Francisco and enjoy.
  8. Yolo County Wineries: Yes, we have them!  Why travel to Napa when you can indulge at home?
  9. Cache Creek Lavender Festival:A celebration of all thing lavender.
  10. Whole Earth Festival: Held at U.C. Davis, a weekend of music, progressive info and tons of tie-dye. Try and top that Coffee County, Alabama.
